The sound is excellent, the picture is superb- obviously there is still the odd amount of grain here and there but overall it is a worthwhile transfer and they have done a great job at bringing it up to a higher definition standard.
I watched it on a 65" tv and it looked great. As for the directors cut and the "New ending" although it is not New but in fact the original intended ending- it made more sense, there was sadness and yes disappointment, but I feel it shouldn't have gone any other way really.
I won't give out any spoilers about the ending but yes there was special effects that it was a shame to cut out as clearly a lot of effort had gone into them!
Even my children thought it looked impressive and that's going by today's standards of CGI that they are used to so for them to appreciate what went into the ending really speaks volumes in my view- as a lot of the time they are tarnished by an over reliance on CGI and 3D type effects so it was a welcome change to see them actually enjoying and appreciating something that they don't often see, something that would be considered "dated" and "not good enough" by most who are used to seeing the type of visuals we are used to today.
If you are considering buying this directors cut then I strongly advice you to just go for it! If you love the movie then you are in for a treat, the overall presentation of the blu ray is well thought out and you feel you are getting your money's worth, the disc itself comes in a nice book style case with a book part at the front that obviously has info and facts, some trivia and stills from the movie.
You can also watch the theatrical cut from the main menu so you have a choice of both versions.
I do feel the directors cut ending could have comfortably ended a few minutes earlier than it did as it does tend to feel a bit dragged- you get the idea and that is all that's needed in my opinion, it doesn't need to go on and on but it was fun to watch none the less.
Seymour dosen't have much going for him apart for his love of exotic plants and his secret love for shop assistant Audrey Ellen Greene.
One day he is sold a strange and interesting plant by a chinese man, after a total eclipse. Taking it back to the shop, he finds that the only way to make it grow is if he feeds it drops of blood!
Soon the plant, named Audrey II, is growing and talking! Flesh, human blood. Seymour finds himself in a dilemna - should he give the plant what it wants and make all his dreams come true?
If you don't take it too seriously, which lets face it you can't, then its a very enjoyable, laugh out loud film.
Some wonderful effects and brilliant casting including Steve Martin as Audrey's sado-masichist dentist boyfriend just don't watch him work if you are afraid of the dentist!
Some nice song and dance numbers will have you tapping your feet and put a smile on your face. I've produced this show - and what a splendid show it is.
I've admired the original movie as well. However this version with the original ending is easily the best experience anyone can have with this story.
Please don't be fooled into thinking that the changes are marginal. In fact the best and most expensively filmed parts of the movie are now restored.
What we finally have is an uproarious vision of capitalism run riot as expressed through the medium of a killer plant!
Yes I know - strange - but its true. The final 15 minutes are an utter treat of masterly effects and storytelling. If you think you enjoyed the movie the first time - trust me - you ain't seen nothing yet!
And yes. The last 15 minutes are completely and utterly different. One major caveat in the middle of all this gushing enthusiasm.
If you're buying on DVD make sure you can play Region 1 releases as that's the only way you're going to get it at the time of writing December Also its as well to note that only the new ending is included on this disk so if you preferred the older version this release is not for you!

An essential purchase! I watched this at an early age and I still love it now and sing along to the songs as much as I ever did!
With a geeky Rick Moranis and a scary Steve Martin, this film doesn't fail to please. Although it looks like a kids film younger children might be a bit worried by the man-eating plant.
