Despite the last SAW movie being called "The Final Chapter" brought us yet another addition to the franchise and it's a real mixed bag. I think the SAW series started off very well, they showed real promise were clever well constructed movies but alas alike so many other horror franchises it got milked into mediocrity.
The movies gradually got worse and worse and they felt desperate, blatant cash ins and it was such a shame that such a franchise had become tarnished.
These things need to know when to call it a day and SAW didn't. So here we have another game, another spate of killings in gruesome fashion but this time it looks like Jigsaw is really back from the grave!
Sprinkled with good ideas Jigsaw is certainly an improvement on other recent efforts and delivers a few twists along the way. It doesn't however come close to the dizzying heights of the first few films.
I'd advise fans of the franchise give this a go but truly believe that this should be the last. Let SAW die before it becomes another franchise whose credibility is gone because it's creators didn't know when to stop.

A cult classic. A thriller to the end. Unfortunately, just like A Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, and other horror classics, as the series goes on, they get more ridiculous.
But this one is the gem! The Saw series is mostly uninspired gore porn. Gore is a cheap trick when you can't think of a good way to make a movie terrifying.
But Saw, the original Saw is not gore porn. It is a taut psychological horror, free from bloat, free from uninspired gore.
There is blood, but the gore is firmly generated by your mind's eye. And your imagination is the seat of your empathy. This makes everything have more impact.
This is a fantastic movie and, as far as I'm concerned, the only one in the series worth watching. It stands alone and it stands the test of time.

This first film is a great thriller-horror, especially the first half, and has some very creative and interesting aspects to it with the gruesome games involved in the often extremely gory and horrific deaths.
I'm no prude, but some of the scenes in this film really are almost too much to bare to watch! You can't help but despair at some of the decisions the characters make, but that's pretty standard in most modern horror films.
Certainly not for the faint-hearted! Saw is a unique film that ultimately loses its way. The first thirty minutes are sublime better than and scarier then anything else in recent memory.
Two men awaken from an apparent abduction chained to pipes and they realise that they are the victim of someone called the Jigsaw killer.
The Jigsaw killer is a genius nightmarish creation. He places people in painstakingly prepared death traps with the victims having to go to endure physical and mental pain in order to escape.
If they do escape they remain forever changed able to embrace the gift of life. By the time the character is first shown he has already reached demonic status and we already know how clever and dangerous he is.
Saw also goes a further than most films, rarely using humour to relief the tension and there is no easy cop out for any of the characters.
I want to give it five stars but I really can't. Towards the end it nose dives a little, becomes a little juvenile, a little too eager to ram home its point that people don't always embrace life as much as we should.
It's almost like the maturity of the central idea can only go so far and the childish need to shock ultimately rules the film.
I still enjoyed immensely and still think its truly original but had it stayed on course til the end it would have been one of the greatest horror films ever made.
Brilliant start to a great series of horror films which have become legendary due to the ingenious "games" giving impossible choices to unwitting victims.
People who have dark secrets that bring them into confrontation with "Jigsaw", and that's not something you want! Great plot, and highly original until the sequels which are similar in style.
Jigsaw has started on a seven dvd, treat of righteous score settling. Not that we have not thought, but would not admit, to similar 'sentences' being imposed on the lowest forms of life.
