GreatMartin Dec 1, The latter is a bitter man who seemingly has nothing but disdain for his son. Johnny feels overwhelmed with all the work he has to do and gets drunk every night occasionally having indiscriminate, unfeeling sex with other young men.

Gheorghe is a Romanian immigrant who lost everything and resents Johnny calling him a gypsy. We watch Johnny and Gheorghe slowly fall in love as they do the hard work required on the farm, starting at first more of a fight, it generally is an exploration of their bodies and an awakening of the emotions they eventually come to feel each other.

There are many tender scenes between the two men and a surprising one between the father and son later in the film.

There are graphic scenes of farm life including the birthing of lambs, including the mouth to mouth resuscitation of one, the death of calves plus the real hard labor of a farmer from building walls of many varied size rocks to putting up fences among many other jobs.

Both Ian Hart and Gemma Jones offering top support with the former being both stern and caring and the latter as not a particular warm women but accepting the farm life and her grandson when she figures out what is going on.

The director and screenwriter Francis Lee shows both the beauty and ugliness of the Yorkshire area in England and also of love. Lee in his feature debut is in complete control and Joshua James Richards with his photography helps the director show his love for the land.

The direction is to be applauded also for its minute attention to details of the farm life though it feels a bit too fetishistic at times with long takes of skinning the animals But the film feels imbalance in its treatment of the two characters.

The handsome Romanian is there to service the British rural farm boy and to bring him out of his repressed stoic way. What's in it for Gheorghe especially when Johnny was nothing but a brutal charmless bloke?

A chance to be away from his poor country? Would he be doing this mainly for economic reasons? Johnny is more like a project than a love interest for someone who's as well-rounded as Georghe.

Amazing how much Josh O'conner's character changes for the better with the introduction of Alec's character in the scene.

You really get a feeling for what difficult job the two men had on the farm and dealing with the negativity of Josh's Disabled Father and Grandmother.

By the end of the film there was a very good chance the the two men would live a happy and useful life together and things would get better in the family home even with the severe disability of Josh's father.

As usual, people attempt to make comparisons to other films with God's Own Country. However this beautiful film clearly stands on it's own and will for a very long time.

The movie itself is a good story; I am just disappointed in Amazon Prime for editing out a certain scenes when they included it for Prime viewers. Shame on you for censorship.

Den Film habe ich gesehen und ich war sogar in der Premiere. Hier ist er! Der Heimatfilm des Geburt, Tod, Armut, Isolation. Ein Idyll ist das ganz und gar nicht.

Man kann dem Text immer gut folgen ohne dabei die Handlung zu verpassen. Aber ich will nicht zu viel verraten. Ebenso die anderen drei Darsteller.

Hier fasse ich mich aber mal kurz. God's Own Country ist trotz der miserablen Situation ganz im hier und jetzt verortet.

Anyway, back to GOC The barren-ness and yet beauty of Yorkshire is so well filmed. Both actors play their roles with courage and conviction.

Although for me this isn't the major point of the film, the sex scenes were so realistic I still don't know how both men manage to achieve that without being sexually arisen.

As I've just stated, for me the film isn't just about sex, it's ultimately about the redemption of both men, although their redemption takes different forms.

Being an old romantic I want to believe that they live happily ever after and for that reason alone I hope they aren't tempted to make GOC 2.

This makes such a refreshing change from the usual films with a homosexual theme. Those invariably have two men, boys, women, girls secretly falling in love.

There's a misunderstanding, they part, they get back together and then they are 'outed' or disinherited by family and friends.

Of course, their is always one person who faithfully stands by them throughout and that person is of the opposite sex to the two main characters.

One of the couple will die, be killed, murdered, be the victim of hate crime or have to move away, leaving the other to ponder nostalgically, what 'might have been'.

They are either that or the sugar-coated unbelievable nonsense churned out by some film companies and countries.

I've just written the story outline for a homosexual themed film!! Thank goodness GOC doesn't fall into either category. My admiration and respect goes out to the four main actors, but especially to Josh O'connor and Alec Secareanu.

It is amazing to see a production unfold where the screenplay, cinematography, acting, and landscape conspire so perfectly to tell a story. This is a movie for any adult - regardless of personal attributes or orientation - and captures what it means to be human.
