Chiefly it is never fun the way "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Slayer" is. None of the actors ever seem to be enjoying themselves.
I like Cusack, and he gives his usual solid performance as Edgar Alan, but somehow it doesn't quite come off; Luke whoever is okay, but has absolutely zero charisma; Alice Eve is so wooden as to evoke no sympathy when she's in peril.
The plot is simply that of a serial killer re-enacting murders from Poe's stories, which causes the police to engage the writer's aid once they have cleared him as a suspect.
If you like Cusack it's worth watching; as a period piece it's not bad; as a moody mystery only so-so. I'm a fan of John Cusack and although I never really studied or read Edgar Allen Poe's work, this was a really good mystery with the right amount of balance of romance and violence added in.
It's nice to see a movie that weaves a story to appeal to ones mind, and not just something thrown together with unnecessary gore and nudity to attract viewers.
