The real-life setting of 's Wyoming and the consequent War of Johnson County were perfect excuses for everything that the film contains Repeatedly, and pretty much intentionally, the movie lingers in several sequences as in attempts to contemplate its own impressionistic visual grandiosity.

Normally, I would codemn such cinematic ego, but truth to be told, the scope is so massive that the expansion of certain sequences is completely justified just for the sake of escapism and appreciation.

Both projects feel like a master's farewell; ironically enough, this was barely Cimino's third feature. I must accept that the story could have been shortened at least one full hour, but why do that when the directorial vision is properly applied and the stars' alignment was exact for using such a tremendous budget?

In a making-of documentary, Jeff Bridges, who played a local entrepreneur, recalls that when it was time to film the climactic battle scenes, the actors would be woken at am, and driven for three hours along dirt roads to the site.

Bei der Premiere am November war der Film mit drei Stunden und 40 Minuten immer noch sehr lang. Die Kritiken waren vernichtend. Warum aber auch Filmkritiker, die für ihre differenzierten und gesellschaftskritischen Positionen bekannt waren und dem Projekt ursprünglich sehr wohlwollend gegenübergestanden hatten, in einen geradezu hämisch-gehässigen Chor des Totalverrisses einstimmten, ist unklar.

Cimino zog die vorliegende Fassung nach dem Sturm der Ablehnung zurück, um sie neu zu schneiden. Dies war das erste Mal in der Filmgeschichte, dass eine so bezeichnete Schnittfassung in die Vermarktung ging.

Diese Fassung wurde aber nur auf Festivals gezeigt. Doch wie viele Filme aus Amerika davor und danach haben das schon gezeigt? The minute version shown in Venice is quite similar to the minute version, but with no intermission.
