Verified Purchase. Incredible film, with a lot of sensible content that really makes me think about how the modern system we currently live under is broken and in dire need of reformation, plus it shows great character development throughout the movie.
I will show this movie to all those I cherish as I believe it has something to teach us all about the world we currently live in.
One if those wild stories set in the wild. Our very essense as creatures of the nature and our over developed modern but disjointed enforced lifestyle in the western world.
A father of 8 choses to leave behind the confinds of systematic life and live in the natural world having previously bought forest land.
Here they are learning, training, surviving off the land. However, the children's bipolar mother is in hospital under close watch having had a serious downturn in which other mental health concerns take a hold and eventually she succumbs.
Distraught and determined the family make their way across the USA to her funeral set up by their religeous grandfather who blames the husband for making her condition worse.
He is warned off that if they come near the funeral he'll have the husband to his dead daughter arrested. This is a struggle of rights, autonamy, growing up, knowledge seeking, egos, preferences, incompatabilities and self realisation.
A strong rights of passage and fish out of water story if there ever was one. Brilliantly portrayed, fabulous settings, 1st class script, totally loved it.
Moving and at times humorous movie about an unconventional father dealing with tragedy and potential family break up.
Not one to watch with a hangover. Quirky and enchanting. It made me think about societal norms and yearn for an alternative to the rat-race.
Ultimately, though, we are measured by our capacity to love - a message strongly sent in this movie. The acting is top-notch, the script intelligent and its great to see Hollywood taking the lesser trod path.
A father decides to home school his kids in the backwoods and when their bipolar mother dies drives them across country to attend her funeral against his in-laws' wishes.
What really stands out in this film, good though award-nominated Viggo Mortenson is as the committed but possibly deluded dad is the magnificent ensemble acting from the youngsters playing his brood, notably George Mackay, an English lad deservedly getting his transatlantic break - and hopefully like Will Poulter and Nicholas Hoult he will get more Hollywood roles and especially Nicholas Hamilton as the angry younger boy.
Some say the ending is a cop-out and a compromise. Possibly but overall the film is worth staying with.
It is only the superb actors that save this from a 1-star rating. Viggo Mortensen and George MacKay among the adults and all of the children are excellent.
The film itself fails in almost every way. A highly implausible plot occasionally raises a week smile but is it meant to be funny?
Schmaltzy and probably aimed at Middle America. The repulsive, Christian, 'civilised' grand-parents win-out against the unconventional and free-spirited.
Viggo even ends up shaving off a very acceptable beard and moving the family to a twee Swiss Family Robinson house in the woods.
A cop-out of an ending. After a while, I found it more profitable to read the morning paper, with just occasional glances at the screen - I don't think I missed anything.
I loved this film, a wonderful thought provoking story and superb acting. Mortensen delivers an incredible performance. I'm speechless that anyone could think this as anything less than the masterpiece that it is.
They say true art makes you feel things - this made me FEEL. Do yourself a favor and watch this movie. A man this determined to live a survivalist life and instill his values and beliefs into his children would have already worked that stuff by now.
The family just come across as misfits. I feel this way every time I come from europe or see amewriucan tourists. Anyway the family is absurd.
It ends up being a parody of leftist pseudo intellectuals. When they celebrate noam Chomsky day, explain how they shouldn't make fun of religions or other people except for christians, and go on a "free the food" mission to rob a grocery store.
Its sort of funny, especially bc they dont realize they are making fun of themselves. I dont understand how this kid got into all the ivy league universities unless the grandfather made a bunch of donations either.
I think celebrating and worshiping Noam Chomsky is the funniest part though, especially when they say "all hail! It was funny how the film tries to portray how superior this family is to "the avg family" or perhaps upper middle class one.
The father says "in. I was rocked by this film. I'm a young father of two boys and was deeply effected by this cinematic experience. I found that this film beautifully portrays and communicates something profound and difficult to describe that exists within us all, within our cellular structure and DNA.
Most of us that have been born into industrialized societies, have long lost touch with what this film speaks to. The wonderful, magical and pure wildness that is subdued, suppressed, and systematically taken away from us piece by piece.
I don't offer this statement to lay blame, or to side with the position that is so eloquently and passionately held by Ben Cash Viggo Mortensen and his family.
Where priorities in life lie in the outer superficialities of materialism. And the numbing, desensitizing disconnection of rampant consumerism.
I personally believe that this is merely the result of evolution. Basic survival needs are met on a large scale in 21st century times.
We have developed the ability to collectively grow and store massive amounts of food, build great and powerful nations, and the branches of science are expanding exponentially it seems.
All of this is to say that I currently believe we haven't figured out how to responsibly manage modern day privilege. Humanity has the ability to access and harness the planets abundance on an unprecedented scale.
Despite the corruption and ferocious greed that have motivated countless and unthinkable atrocities in which we all are accountable, no matter how far removed, I believe that we can transform our evolution.
Into wisdom and reason. That we can evolve, together. I choose to believe that we can reconnect to our true nature and, perhaps paradoxically, be modern human beings as well.
If you assume that there is an instinct for freedom, that there are opportunities to change things, then there is a possibility that you can contribute to making a better world.
This film paints a strange and strangely beautiful picture. I rarely write reviews on movies. This one twisted something in my heart that makes me want to speak up.
This film reminds me of my own childhood and the struggle to find a place in the world. I was raised by former hippies who took a sharp turn into a fundamentalist Christian cult.
We mostly lived at the fringes of society, but both my parents gave me gifts strange and out-of-step though they were that have helped me carve something unique in a mostly homogenous world.
I loved the sense of tribal camaraderie, discipline, and rugged code of honor in this film. I also identified with the pain of the intense, sincere young man the oldest son as he came to realize that he was good enough to make it in "normal" society, but that he would also stand out like a parakeet among sparrows.
This film is inspiring because of its reminder that we are all unique if we choose to be, and that we have a right to pursue that singular shape of ourselves to the ends of the earth--society be damned if need be.

Somebody I met at church recommended this to me. She was right - it's a great film. Thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish.
To a parent it poses lots of difficult questions. I rooted for the characters, while at the same time seeing the absurdity of some of the behaviour.
It didn't romanticise things too much. Anyone who endorses Noam Chomsky day is a bit mad in my book. The soundtrack was moving, the set-pieces made me laugh, the ending is uplifting.
Stumbled across this film by accident - one of the happiest accidents ever! An awesome film, the kids all put in stellar performances and steal the show in almost every scene.
