Maybe that is just me bc its the second movie in a row I did nut understand what it all meant when it ended. I mean, I sort of got it; It was not very scary but was very well done.
No sex, no nudity, no swearing, no heavy making out, not much violence, no blood and guts. But there were well done scary characters.
I understand that the girl was in a coma dreaming about her real life which had a demon in it, a fact she finally came to understand and tried to get rid of.
And then we see the little girl in a car with a new set of parents asking where is her brother. Or was that a different girl or wtf?
Seeing director Hideo Nakata attached, it's easy for marketers and Japanese horror fans to gravitate towards Nakata's genre-defining at least in the States Koji Suzuki based movies Ring and Dark Water.
Of course, outside of those two films, Nakata has been attached to many more movies with more middling reviews or outright poor reviews like his Stateside film, The Ring Two.
This one falls somewhat in the middling review territory but I am prone to bump it up a star or so because in the second half it does what it does well: which is nothing quite like the trailer attached to it pretends.
The trailer shows a cliche-ridden lower budget Japanese horror film and taglines it as "more frightening than Ringu or Dark Water".
This is false. The first half does play at more normal trappings for a "new apartment is haunted" movie of which there is many with some nice moody moments as a person new the area is drifting through a crowd without ever really having a normal interaction.
As the story progresses, strange dialogue and odd directional choices build more and more into an insight of the true mystery. It is also, perhaps, a more subtle look at the living people behind the hauntings than other such films, with one character's life given largely in a series of photographs and possessions without comment.
The ending fails it by being too much of an definite horror movie coda spoiled a by cheap, unnecessary effects [I liked the sort of Kwaidan throwback lighting effects, at least], a step back in acting, and having a built up plot thread go nowhere rather than carrying on the subtler, more poignant ghosts-as-metaphor angle any further.
So, it is not genre defining, but if you avoid letting the trailer, tag-lines, and description set you up for false expectations there is a quite decent movie, here.
The Complex isn't a perfect film, but it builds on a time-honored formula: Nothing is what it seems to be. In fact, The Complex resembles a Korean thriller more than a J-horror flick, in the kaleidoscopic subjective-cinema way things are frequently turned upside down to reveal more of what's really going on.
The truth, once you discover it, is nothing really new, but its truly thriling in the way the pieces fall together I'm pretty sure a lot of the low ratings were from people who got lost , and it's genuinely scary all the way through, and the lovely cinematography and some fine performances by the young stars help lift it up to near-Ringu status.
But what puts it over the top is an exciting, compelling score by veteran composer Kenji Kawai, which keeps the heart racing.
I've seen them all, and this one still scared the heck out of me, while doing an ingenious job orchestrating the threatening power of grief and guilt in a way I haven't seen since 'Dark Water.

I have watched many Asian horror movies the past 10 years. Cinema from Korea, Japan, Thailand, India and it is usually horror. I have not been impressed with this Low budget, simple plot horror movie.
That something to watch when there really is not anything worth watching on television and you don't want to watch any of the saved stuff on your Sky box.
I have recently decided that this is not a DVD worthy of my collection, not one I could see myself watching again so have kindly donated it to the local charity shop.
Given 2 stars as the picture on the front was okay and story was not all that boring, managed to watch until the end.
I won't spoil it for everyone else but I honestly could say that if you want slasher, gory, jumps, lots of plot twist you won't find it with this one.
