I can't say that she wasn't a nice person - she was by most accounts. But it twisted her view of the world.
It gave her an exaggerated since of her own importance. Her career and her work were always far more important than anything else.
I can't blame her, on the contrary. I think she made the best choices for herself, and that's the most one can do with one's life.
Her first daughter was very well cared for by her first husband, Petter Lindstrom. And by all accounts Ingrid was a nice and friendly person, just more interested in the imaginary life of theatre and cinema than in everyday life, and family life.
Not to mention that it's none of our business. I love her films and the photographs of her. She was very, very special, and very much alive.
I always remembered that name for some reason, it sounded so exotic to me at the time it was reported in the newspapers. They had a little girl after getting married and all of Ingrid's children from Pia down are on most excellent terms.
He eventually left Sonali for a younger woman. He must have been one charming man because it didn't appear to be his dashing looks that attracted these women to him.
Roberto Rossellini was an abusive asshole and he was part of the problem. Ingrid wasn't allowed to see Pia unless she went to California and Roberto apparently refused to let her go.
In fact, Donald Spoto writes in "Notorious" that when Ingrid said enough and agreed to do "Anastasia" that they "quarreled violently, and Roberto threatened, yet again, to kill himself by crashing his Ferrari into a tree.
Pia is also quoted in Spoto's book as saying her father Petter hated her spending a summer with Ingrid and her step-siblings Robertino and Isabella.
On top of all that, Petter had taken all of Ingrid's earnings for "Stromboli" and claimed they were for Pia, but instead had bought a huge house for himself with it and financed his own divorce case with her money.
Thanks for the post, R Lars Schmidt, her third husband, seems to be the one she was truly happy with.
They were married some 18 years I think. But of course is the one you never hear about. I always loved that part of her life more the 50s, 60s and 70s.
She seemed happier and more confident. I am sure he played a great deal in that. And, life begins at forty. Ingrid was actually formally denounced on the Senate floor and I believe banned from returning to the country for awhile which obviously made it more difficult to see her daughter.
I think another actress could have survived the scandal better, but she had such a pure image with the public that they could not deal with it.
I read an interview with Isabella once where it was clear she loved her mother, but was aware of her flaws.
She had said she had basically once what was most important to her, and she could tell her mother was pained when she honestly answered her career.
I believe she lost both her parents early, and I suspect she found solace in acting at that became hardwired in her as her life line. I also saw Pia and Isabella interviewed on a PBS special, where they spoke of some of these things, but also seemed to for the most part have fond memories of their mother.
I don't think there will be any Mommie Dearest books from them. I think because Ingrid was honest about her mothering skills and did not pretend she was mother of the year and she was not an abusive mother and treated them with respect that her kids understood her and ultimately in the end had a good relationship with her.
She obviously wore make-up in her films, but her style when she came over in was much more natural. I recently saw Cactus Flower.
She is around 50, but still attractive. However, unlike how it would be today, she does not try to look or dress like she is Didn't Esther Williams do the same thing to her 3 kids when she married Fernando Lamas?
He said he would marry her only without the kids -- and she agreed. They dowdied Ingrid up for "Cactus Flower" early on so she could transform, and you're right, they kept it age appropriate.
The scene where she's trying to get down and be hip on the dance floor is charming, though a little outdated. She still looks lovely even when making faces.
From what I understand Pia recently agreed to introduce Casablanca along with Isabella at MOMA so one can assume Pia has made some peace with her difficult childhood and most of the resentment she might have had towards her mother.
She was obviously very successful and was as non fucked up as a lot of people would have been. A very mediocre Columbia soaper from ' It's especially ludicrous seeing an impossibly youthful and radiant Bergman ending up with a late middle aged jowly Warner Baxter but it is definitely worth seeing for watching her square off with a brazen, horny, evil, young Susan Hayward.
I saw that movie, R I didn't realize how tall Bergman was until I saw that movie and saw how she towered over everyone.
Susan Hayward was like a little rag doll next to her. I would like to know where that auto is today, possibly in the Bulgari Collection.
Separately, Cactus Flower is a pretty fascinating film. Bergman was very beautiful and had some great lines, including masterful jabs at Mathau's character's schlubby friend.
Rossellini had a Ferrari custom-made for Ingrid Bergman cost a fortune , but she didn't like cars. I always assumed that it was, but saw it recently, and while the movie comes across as a dated melodrama and she is a bit overwrought at times, she is pretty effective in a number of scenes.
I am guessing politics played a part of her winning, but there have been many much more undeserving Oscars handed out. I thought Helen Hayes was especially effective in her supporting role.
She controls every scene in which she appears. I always respected Bergman's acting choices; she did not shy away from stage work. In fact, she was doing Broadway plays all along.
She played the lead in Maxwell Anderson's "Joan of Lorraine" on Broadway, which was a success, before filming the massive epic, "Joan of Arc," which was not a success, though it contributed to her unpopularity with Rosselini, with everyone publicly asking, "How could a saint act like this?
They still do I saw Bergman late in her life, in a revival of W. Somerset Maugham's "The Constant Wife," which is actually still quite contemporary in its outlook.
A married woman discovers her husband is having an affair so she calmly tells him she will do the same, and, in the end, she does.
She has no plans to leave him, but she will enjoy herself the way he does. Very contemporary. What's even more fascinating is that it's really a comedy, and Bergman was excellent.
It's amazing to see such a big movie star, able to manage such a delightful performance onstage. One of the more memorable theatre experiences I've had.
And I've had a lot. To be honest, I've never seen it; haven't seen all that many Ingmar Bergman films, though this is one I've meant to catch up with for years.
No, it was Esther who didn't want kids around, her's were grown and out. According to Lorenzo Lamas's book, when he moved from NY and his mother Arlene Dahl, to LA as a young teen to try acting, Esther didn't want him around but agreed he could stay if he lived in the garage.
And it was a garage. He was alowed to come in and use the bathroom on the ground floor, but he didn't have kitchen privileges.
I have not seen Autumn Sonata, but I have heard while it is not considered one if Ingmar's bests, the performances of Ulman and Bergman are excellent.
Many consider it Ingrid's best performance and that it should have been her fourth Oscar I wonder if she would have won if she had not gotten the Orient Express Oscar just a few years later.
It was speculated that is was so good due to her own personal history, although I have also heard some people factor in being able to act in her native Swedish making her performance more real.
I don't think she considered Casablanca very challenging acting wise, but the character's presence really fueled the plot of the movie.
I don't think it would have been as successful if she did not have such a radiant screen presence. She was only about 26 at the time, I am not sure many of today's young actresses would have that presence.
This year, being the centennial of Bergman's birth, means her films are being screened everywhere, introduced by her children noted earlier in this thread.
Her image was the official Cannes Film Festival billboard this past season. Isabella is also producing a documentary I think, and promoting it heavily.
She had done that with Rossellini, yet offended her sibling s with some of the content I think produced in an avant guarde comedic style, possibly with Guy Madden.
I tried to watch it, but switched it off when it began featuring Isabella acting as Roberto in the form of a giant talking belly.
She's a neat lady but her humor can be esoteric. I saw Pia Lindstrom speak about her mother at MoMA last week, she was introducing Notorious, and she spoke very kindly of her -- I actually had no idea about all of this abandonment stuff til reading this thread and I wouldn't have guessed it from how warm Pia's stories were.
She was a fantastic speaker, and just exuded classiness. I was really impressed with her. I'd thought we were getting Isabella to introduce the film but I was glad to sidestep that kook for once.
R55, according to Esther's own book, she left her kids, who were not full grown at all. When Lorenzo came around was much later in time.
Here are Bergman's 3 daughters being interviewed together by Larry king. I'm sure there's some glossing over going on here, but the good nature feeling they seem to have toward their mother seems genuine.
You guys covered the whole story pretty well in this thread so far. The only thing that hasn't been mentioned yet was how Rossellini left Anna Magnani for Bergman and screwed up a couple of other people along the way.
Rosseliini was planning to film a movie called Vulcano taking place on some small volcanic island starring his mistress Anna Magnani he was still oficially married to a costume designer Marcella De Marchis at the time and written by his cousin Renzo Avanzo when he received a letter from Ingrid Bergman in which she wrote that she saw some of his movies and would realy like to work with him.
After Rosselini had met Bergman he decided to film a movie very similar to Vulcano with Bergman in the leading role - without telling Magnani, his cousin and the rest of the film crew of Vulcano anything about that!
When they found out they were being double crossed by Rosselini they quickly found the producers and started to film Vulcano while Rosselini filmed his own and a bit different version of the same story called Stromboli a couple of islands away.
The whole thing was known as "the war of the Vulcanos" in the press. Both movies ended up being big flops and to make matters worse Vulcano was released the same day Bergman gave birth to Rosselinni's child.
La Magnani and Rosselinni made up a couple of years before Magnani's death in and when she died she was actually buried in Rosselinni's family tomb her son moved her body to some other small cemetery near Rome a couple of years later.
Oh yeah, and I just remember that Pia Lindstrom was on the panel of What's my Line when Angela Lansbury was a mystery guest and Angela remembered how she met young Pia on the set of Gaslight years ago.
I can't imagine why not. She couldn't see her daughter because of him. He didn't want her to work and did everything to prevent it. He apparently tried to control her at all times.
I can't imagine why she didn't feel inspired to pleasure him. I adore Cagney but I read that when he came home from work his children had to leave him alone and stay in a different part of the house because he had to study and concentrate on the next day's filming.
R66 He was hot, but Rossano Brazzi in Vulcano was hotter in my opinion. Plus I also think Vulcano is a better and much more entertaining movie than Stromboli.
The Larry King interview with her three daughters is quite wonderful. There is a marked difference between Pia, primarily an American child and her two Italian sisters.
Pia has a more harsh view on the scandal, how it affected her father and herself. Isabella and Ingrid seem less concerned and gentle, not so journalistic.
Interesting, elegant women, all of them. At one point Pia says their mother never really lived with any of them, yet they are full of warmth and affection for Bergman.
Thanks for posting R Yeah R59 I've grown very fond of Pia Lindstrom since the recent documentary. Seemed like a smart and classy lady.
Love the interview with her three daughters, the European ones are so much more charming, all three of them smart and articulate.
R5 I hate you. You're a passive aggressive twat spouting off your mentally ill diatribe. Typing your psychotic shit and then adding all the fucking lines through it.
You're a fucking cunt. Ingrid has a presence I'll say, a natural beauty but her acting was very terrible. She always had this stupid look on her face.
Infamous comment by Pia Lindstrom overheard after she was walking with a friend out of a movie theater where 'Death becomes Her" was playing:.
Yes indeed, we too use "cookies. I know we do! You can thank the EU parliament for making everyone in the world click on these pointless things while changing absolutely nothing.
Otherwise, you'll just have to find some other site for your pointless bitchery needs. Become a contributor - post when you want with no ads! Why did Ingrid Bergman abandon her daughter Pia Lindstrom?
Well she certainly was a cunt if I ever saw one! Anymore dirt on her? Boy I just love DL gossip! I wish that others who feel the same will care enough to do what they can to help her.
I think it was quite the scandal at the time. I always thought she had a chubby and plain face. From to , she was a news anchorwoman and also a theater and arts critic for WNBC-TV in New York City, and made television appearances and did some acting in mostly Italian films before she became a news correspondent.
She received two Emmy Awards for news coverage and on-screen performance, as well as the Associated Press Broadcaster's Award.
She is now retired. They married on December 28, From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Television reporter from Sweden. Stockholm , Sweden. Joseph Daly.

She loves you all so much, please go to her soon to help her! She really needs this!!! If you feel you can do it just do it!!!
Help Marilyn!!! I really really love Marilyn so much, she means a lot to me and she's the greatest and so magical and fascinating. I think it's such a shame that many who claim that they love Marilyn lots don't show it in their actions by doing anything to help her when she needs it.
It really is such a shame that those cowardly fakers don't help Monroe. Poor Marilyn! She has such a big heart with full of love to give, but gets hurt in return because some people don't really stick by her and truly dedicate themselves to her.
Please do copy this whole post and share it as much as you can for Marilyn, because I'm deleting my account soon to show my respects and dedication to her, my way of expressing myself to her and to show her that she's the only one that matters and that I really love.
And since I'm going to Marilyn myself too, I don't need this account anymore. I know the spiritual people and fellow spirit workers on DL will confirm this, they talk to the spirits and Marilyn tried to contact them too!
R2 Link please for Ingrid Bergman telling people her child was "grotesquely ugly. Ingrid Bergman was very ambitious and probably damaged herself having lost both parents at an early age, her mother when she was 2 years old and her father when she was 13 years old.
Did she abandon Pia or was custody removed because of the scandal? Another question to DL's old movie experts.
Is it true that Ingrid Bergman wore no makeup in her Hollywood films? I read that she and Selznick agreed on that.
She was one beautiful woman. I think she left her husband for Rosellini and had to choose between him and Pia. The father wanted custody of Pia too and he got it because Bergman wanted to take the kid out of the country.
Not sure why she and Rosellini didn't move to NYC. R9 you are thinking of Isabelli Rosellini. We are discussing Pia Linstrom, her first daughter.
Pia was a TV anchorwoman not an actress. The father was granted the custody of their daughter, but it still seems strange to me that they didn't see each other for almost a decade.
I've read somewhere that the father was a very possesive guy and maybe he prevented Pia from seeing Ingrid until she turned R8 Ingrid Bergman wore makeup in her Hollywood films.
Here's a photo of Ingrid Bergman from "Saratoga Trunk" wearing a wig and makeup. Bergman was considered kind of a whore for what she did.
Public and judicial opinion was very much with the father. Wasn't she kind of banned from working in Hollywood? I think that 3rd oscar she won fpr Murder on the Orient Express was kind of a welcome back prize.
R15 It was a huge scandal and she was even denounced on the floor of the US Senate. Cary Grant accepted the Oscar for her. The following year, she returned and presented the Oscar for Best Picture during the Academy Awards.
Was she good in Anastasia? Did she deserve to win or was it a political statement by the academy? Not certain if this has been mentioned.
A week after her son was born, she divorced Lindstrom and then married Rossellini in Mexico. Old hollywood stars were always having affairs but pregnancy by a man other than the husband may have been too much.
Film historian David Thomson notes that this would become "the start of an astonishing impact on Hollywood and America" where her lack of makeup contributed to an "air of nobility.
There are a few films where she wears no make-up Stromboli, Autumn Sonata, both greatly recommended , but neither are Hollywood films. With Ingrid Bergman, Selznick started a new "natural" look, which suited her very well.
It wasn't literally no make-up, more what we call today a "nude" makeup look. Ingrid Bergman was very ambitious. While I can't say she lacked the maternal instinct entirely, I have heard stories that indicate her career was far more important than her children.
Once when she had come back from a long shoot in Europe and she was set to film a movie scene or appear in a play in New York, she had weeks before the performance.
Yet she opted not to see her children before the performance even though she hadn't seen them for months.
She said that it would "take her out of character" to see her children before the performance. Maybe because she was so young when Pia was born - I think, of all her children, she was particularly inattentive to Pia.
Ingrid Bergman was a huge international star in the days when the studios treated stars like royalty and guarded their images.
