Rosseliini was planning to film a movie called Vulcano taking place on some small volcanic island starring his mistress Anna Magnani he was still oficially married to a costume designer Marcella De Marchis at the time and written by his cousin Renzo Avanzo when he received a letter from Ingrid Bergman in which she wrote that she saw some of his movies and would realy like to work with him.
After Rosselini had met Bergman he decided to film a movie very similar to Vulcano with Bergman in the leading role - without telling Magnani, his cousin and the rest of the film crew of Vulcano anything about that!
When they found out they were being double crossed by Rosselini they quickly found the producers and started to film Vulcano while Rosselini filmed his own and a bit different version of the same story called Stromboli a couple of islands away.
The whole thing was known as "the war of the Vulcanos" in the press. Both movies ended up being big flops and to make matters worse Vulcano was released the same day Bergman gave birth to Rosselinni's child.
La Magnani and Rosselinni made up a couple of years before Magnani's death in and when she died she was actually buried in Rosselinni's family tomb her son moved her body to some other small cemetery near Rome a couple of years later.
